Just don't like to sit on the puter at home once I get home from work. And the weekends, well, there always seems to be something going on (homework, housework, playing with the grand kids, etc)

I have a few pictures to share. Not many as my crochet time has been a little limited. Pictures 1 and 2 are of a shawl made for an Elder Center on Pine Ridge. CFAC had a challenge to make items for the Elder Center. It is called Simply Shawl and the pattern can be found here. Definatley fun to make. Good thing as I need to make one for a friend of mine.

Next, we have a caplette also for the Elder Center. I'm hoping it is making one special lady feel elegant as she goes to dinner with her friends. Pattern name and link?? Chanson En Crochet There are several errors - the fixes can be found here.

And lastly, the first yo yoghan of the year is completed (well, I did make another one, but that was for my grandson - materials donated by my friend

Carol). A flannelghan for my youngest son - done in black and red. It is almost done. Super easy pattern and it comes together really fast. Thanks for popping in. Leave me a comment to say hi. So much going on, that I tend NOT to sit at my computer too much at home. (well, checking e-mails and such, but not much else.) So, let's see if I can update some of what has been helping me de-stash my yarn stash.

In September, an afghan was started for a friend at church. It was finally finished last week. If it would have been worked on with no other crochet interruptions, my friend would have had it sooner. Seems as if I had Crochet ADD. lol

I needed something to keep my hands warm at work. They always keep it too cool for my comfort. These fingerless mitts were perfect. And so easy to make. The pattern is from Interweave Crochet (Fall 2009) and the pattern name is Orchard Mitts. (BTW - this year, work has turned up the heat, so no need for them at work. But they keep my hands warm while driving to work)

This past Oct, while at the Women of Faith Conference in Tampa, my friends and I scouted out the stores at the local mall. My friend found a scarf which she fell in love with. "Oh, I bet Jana can make one of these!!" Luckily her birthday was soon, so this is what I found to make for her.

Let's see, what else. Oh! This same friend gave me (for my b-day) a Crochet Today magazine. Of which these were from. Made a set of 6 for another friend's housewarming gift. Now, hubby wants a set.

On the hook right now is this afghan (for my niece's wedding present). I started it about 3 days ago and am almost done. (no work at all this week. Lots of time to crochet).

Sadly, not much has been done for CFAC these past few months. I've had to play catch up on personal projects. But with all of these other projects now getting finished up, I'll have more time to play with the yo yos which have been accumulating.

Happy Birthday CFAC!!!

Crafting for a Cause turned 5 years old in July. Hard to believe that when I joined in 2005 there were 12 members. We are now close to 250!!! And all the hands working together are doing so much to warm the hearts and bodies of so many. Come check us out. We would love to have your hands too.

To celebrate, CFAC has asked the members to each make one hat or scarf to send to one of our causes on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. As of last count, 77 items had been made and sent. Isn't this awesome?!?!?!? My hook and yarn produced 4 scarves and 3 hats.

And one more yo yo ghan made out of the double yo yos has been put together. These go really fast. I am behind on making yo yoghans using the single yo yos, so this week I have been concentrating on making more squares using the single ones. A BIG container from Micheals with hundreds of beads of all different sizes. So far 2, yes TWO, book thongs have been made. That big container still contains lots and lots of beads.
Drawstring Beach Bag - I showed Sue (my friend and designer of the bag) the crochet cotton I wanted to use for this bag. It was what was left over from a pounder of Bernat Handicrafter. Both of us thought, yeah, this will be enough to make the bag. NOT!!! I am halfway thru and, yes, you guessed it, I ran out. To top it off, they no longer make the colorway I am using (blue grass). I even e-mailed my fav on line yarn store (where I bought it from) to see if she had any lying around. Another big NOT!! Sue lives near a Micheals and a JoAnns and pretty much inhabits on a weekly basis. (Me? I live in the boonies and have to trek 45 min in any direction to get yarn.) She thinks she found a colorway close to what I ran out of. Until I see her again, this project is hibernating.
Now for the Cocoon - What a fun, quick project! And it would have worked had my daughter not delivered a whopper of a baby. I even made the version needed for a larger newborn. Yeah right. Well, we did wait til the baby was a month old to have pics taken. But even so....He is a moose - he will be 6 weeks this week and he weighs in at 14 pounds!! Needless to say, he just wouldn't fit. I gave the cocoon to my friend (part time baby photographer). She can use it for normal, small babies. Or as a hat for herself. Yes, she put it on her head and it made a cute slouchy hat. lol
I finished the afghan for our couch. Will post pics once I take some. A few more dischcloths have been made. For who? One for my daughter and the others possibly for my SIL. Her and my brother just moved and thought this would make a nice, small housewarming gift. (my brother says she has too much stuff, lol)
A bunch of double yo yos have been mailed to me and these will be assembled to make another yo yo ghan. And I also have the yarn ready to go for an afghan pattern that a friend from Ravelry mailed to me. But I am not feeling overwhelmed with all this right now. This a good thing, right?
Enough rambling. Time to get my behind in gear. 7:15 a.m. - church is at 9. And I still have to get Aubrey out of bed and ready besides getting myself ready. Hope everyone has a wonderful, blessed day!!!

Yarn, Crochet Hooks and Patterns

Getting that feeling again of having too many projects on my plate - or should I say "on my hooks". Trying to finish a balero for my daughter. The back and left side are done, just need to do the the right side and the sleeves. The pattern is pretty easy, but I always seem to pick up something else to work on. Like an afghan, or maybe a coaster or two - dishcloths, chapstick holders....
Oh, my little grandson arrived on May 17th!! All are healthy and the happy family is home adjusting to all the newness. My granddaughter has picked up her roll as the big sister. She loves it.
Going yarn shopping today with my Crochetville friend, Sue (aka TurtleLvr). We always have so much fun - and she always throws extra yarn in my cart!! I swear..I go in with a simple little list and walk out with bags of extras. lol Guess that overwhelming feeling will continue to haunt me. I have my list of what I need to comple more WIM's - like book thongs, a drawsting beach bag (pattern by Sue), a baby cocoon (for baby pics of my newest little angel). Yikes!! Guess I should get off this puter and crochet a bit before I leave for our yarn excursion.

Time Flies by....

How can it be April already! One baby afghan has been completed and she will receive it tomorrow. A second one is being made for the other grandma to have.

This is her 1st grandchild. Boy, do I remember that excitement. Not saying that the second time around isn't exciting too. Trust me, it is VERY exciting!

One more yo yoghan has been almost wrapped up. I watched it light up the morning sky before heading to work. It was spectacular! The sky was so clear you could see it forever and ever and ever! And with the sky being so clear, the roar and shaking of the windows lasted longer than normal. I am going to miss the rumble and views once this fabulous "aircraft" is retired. Oh, I how I wish this weren't happening. What about all those little tots and teenagers who have dreams of becoming astronauts and exploring space and other worlds. This is a true tradgedy.

Good Bye 2009

Hello 2010!!! And as with every new year, there are so many WIM's floating around the house. Well, with Rav, I guess you could say they are all floating around in my que.

The table runner was finished with time to spare and really set off the kitchen table. No crochet projects were made for Christmas presents this year, so there was no stumbling over my fingers to finish projects on time. This made for a mostly relaxing pre-holiday.

Another tulipghan is on the hook. This one will be for a Breast Cancer charity auction put on by my cousin and her team (Team Cowgirls).

And I am also working on the Alpine Lace Scarf using the finest yarn I have ever used before. Fine as in the quality and the thinness. Jaggerspun Zephyr Wool-Silk. Have a feeling it won't get finished until next winter. Oh well. Told my daughter I will make one for her also - for next Christmas.

Off to do the household chores that never got done during my week off. Let's see if I can do this again WITH OUT screwing it up.

With Christmas being only 4 weeks away, I figured it was time to make the Diamond Table runner (from this pamphlet). The plan is to have it all done and on my table for Christmas dinner. It is done with #3 Crochet Thread. Wish me luck!

A little over a year ago, my SIL gave me a dishcloth she bought at an Amish flea market. No, not for me to use, but for me to re-create and make for her. lol After having it glare at me for this long, I figured I would actually look closely at it and give it a shot. Voila' Such an easy project to do! Now to get a few made for her, wrap them and put them under the tree (which will be up on Sunday with the help of my 5 year old granddaughter.)

The projects completed for the infusion center (CFAC) - 2 Super Simply Charity Blankets and another Yo Yoghan. They are all being mailed off today for the next infusion center delivery (along with 2 previously made yo yoghans). 2 scarves and one hat will need to be put in the mail soon - these are going to the Pine Ridge Reservation. Just waiting for mom to finish the scarf she is working on - that will make 3 scarves!! Just can't imagine how cold it gets on the reservation. Trying to keep as many warm as possible.

Other than crochet, I have been cleaning and painting the "kids" bathroom now that all the kids are on their own. (did you hear me yelling YEAH!!!) All that is left to do is paint the baseboards, put up a new mirror and get the shower curtain ordered. And this all has to be done before Christmas so our guests can use it. I love making old rooms into new rooms. After this little room is done, I will start working on what will be my new computer/toy room (for the granddaughter). Already have the curtains picked out - just need to find the right color paint.

Guess it is time for me to start my day. Have lots to do, then heading up to Daytona Beach (45 min drive time) to pick up my granddaughter for the weekend. Alligator Farm tomorrow...decorating for Christmas on Sunday. Yes, I am just a tad bit excited. lol
Toodles for now!

Need Christmas Ideas?

Do you need help with your Christmas shopping ideas? Want something unique and not "store bought"? Check out the Crafting for a Cause Web Store. At the top of the page you will see tabs for Handcrafted Items, Craft Supplies, Craft Books and more. There is jewlery, angel ornaments, a baby doll with 2 sets of clothes, burp cloths....all kinds of good finds.
The best part is that when you shop at this site, all the money raised goes to buy propane for needy families on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in SD. Please, come check out the store and tell your friends. Remember, this could be a two-fold gift - a gift for your loved one and a gift of warmth this winter for a needy family.
P.S. There are no shipping costs. Just lazy. Too lazy to sit and post an entry. But I can sit and play Bejeweled for hours. lol Some crochet has been done. Several hats were made and sent to the CFAC Web Store. (come by and take a peek at what is for sale!!) About a dozen hangars were sent along with the hats too. The Wool Eater is off the hooks and was mailed to the happy couple. Now they will be really warm in the cold Buffalo winter. One more yo yoghan is ready to be sent to the children's infusion center. This one turned out so different since it was joined with purple instead of white. And 3 out of 6 placemats are done.

More hangars are being made for the church's fall flea market. So far, 23 are ready to go. The Super Simply Charity Blankie was started from some gifted white yarn. But it is on hold as I wait for some blue yarn being mailed from a fellow Rav member. It was going to be all white, but thought NAH. It needs some other color. Off to Rav to search for someone who was trying to offload their stash. Voila!! And it was so much cheaper than buying it at the store.

Time to go play Bejeweled - then off to crochet or read a book. Oh, did I mention?? I am now officially an empty nester. The last of my 3 rug rats moved out yesterday!!! What to do...what to do....(p.s. today is mine and hubby's anniversary! What a great present our youngest gave us. Don't ya think??)

Too Much to Do!!

I've gotten to the point of feeling overwhelmed with my crochet projects again. Not good. The latest yo yoghan just needs a few ends tied in and the border completed. That should take all of 1/2 hour, but just can't seem to pick it up. Instead more projects were started. A dish cloth, 1 out of 6 placemats and the wool eater blanket. Now CFAC's CAL for August is making hats, mittens and scarves for the kids on the reservation. Several hats and scarves are already made and anxiously awaiting to be mailed. (yes, I kinda knew this CAL was coming up, so I started early.lol) Hats and scarves are great stashbusters!

My mom gave me the coolest book a while back. The Complete Book of Crochet - dated 1947!! Everyday I seem to flip thru the pages looking at all the fun patterns - and some kinda REALLY dated ones too. Beautiful doilies, very pretty edgings and some pretty funky loooking hats. One day maybe I will try something in there. But not until the WIPs are completed.

How is everyone else doing? What projects are on your hooks/needles - or what patterns are calling your name?

Take care and until next time...

Toodles!

Squares, Hats and Hangars

Been awhile since I have been here. Been busy with the normal daily routines of life..work, house work, reading and of course, crochet. Finally figured out a plan so I don't get bored just crocheting one thing. (taking a break from the yo yoghans). CFAC's monthly challenge for June is to make squares. Any size or color desired. I am making these pretty little flower squares. Make four of them, tie in the ends set them aside. (Pattern can be found for these in Country Woman magazine April/May 2009)

Then I make a hat (for CFAC of course). This pattern was designed by Julie Bolduc and is called The Addison Hat. I cannot find the pattern on line anymore. Luckily I printed it out. They are so much fun and easy to make. After that, make a hangar (cover a hangar with yarn like my grandma taught me.) The hangars are for the Christmas bazaar at church.

And for those of you that enjoy reading a good book, I have to point you towards my book list over to the right. Check out Love and Duty. Usually, I don't venture into reading many true stories - and never do I read war stories. But this one is so different and so good. If you don't want to buy it, check your local library to see if they can get it for you. It really puts love, honor, and duty in a new light. Atleast in my eyes. I bought this book while visiting Andersonville, GA. This was a wonderful experience - one that I would love to go and re-do. Mom, Dad and I stayed at an amazing B&B (Americus Garden Inn). Anyways, back to the book. If you do read this book, please let me know your thoughts on it.

Off to figure out what to feed my growling belly. Toodles!

Suggestions Please

A couple weeks ago, my friend went to Ireland and brought this back for me. I have never worked with wool, but I am told it is just like working with WW - unless you are allergic to wool. But I have no idea of what to make with this hank of wool. I could make a hat or two for the reservation, but in my heart, I want to make something for me since my friend bought it with me in mind. Living in Florida, a wool hat or scarf just is not practical. One of my friends suggested the crochet hook case by Priscilla Hewitt. But I wanted to see what my other crochet fanatic friends come up with too. Any ideas?

Life has kept me away from the computer and crocheting for quite some time. Work has been going haywire. We house/dog sat for my friend (yes the one who went to Ireland) for 2 weeks. My hubby's brother passed away. 2 1/2 weeks later on Palm Sunday my best friend passed away. And hubby's granny passed away a little over a week ago. My mind frame is finally getting back to the hook and yarn. Yo yoghan #2 for the year is on the hook. It is a little over half way done. The same scarf is still in progress - no further along from the last post. I was able to make 12 - 7" squares for CFAC and send them off to one of our members for assembly. I am anxious to finish the yo yoghan and start on a new project.

Looking forward to hearing your ideas for the wool.

It's Either Feast or Famine

Ever have those times where you are just not sure what you want to do with your crochet/crafting time? Nothing seems to spark that interest in you, so you just pick a project and later set it aside 'cuz it just isn't doing anything for you. So you start another project. That is kinda where I was at. Knowing that I needed to work on a yo yo ghan, but just not in the mood for it. So I started making saltines just to pass the time (and destash). My last post I mentioned buying the yarn to make my next Tulip afghan as a RAOK gift. I was so excited to finally have that project that was going to light the fire under my behind and get me motivated. I was so excited when the package of yarn came! And I know exactly who will get this RAOK gift. Can't say. Not sure if this person reads my blog or not. So, this tulipghan (done in shades of blue instead of my normal shades of burgundy's and pinks) is about 1/4 the way done. Good thing, as I am getting lots of yo yos in the mail lately and have be put on notice that more are on the way. Love making these lapghans, just think I was getting burned out on them. Now I am ready and raring to go.

To add to these projects, a friend from church asked me to finish a hat that was sent to her for finishing. It is made with fun fur - and the person who was making ran out. PLUS...another friend asked me to make a couple baby bonnets. She gave me the pattern. Said she had tried to make it, but it just wasn't working for her. Bought the yarn for this project today.

So, let's see, tulipghan, yo yo's, fun fur hat, baby bonnets....

Oh, and I wanted to share these pics with you. This is the bread store that I have mentioned in a past post where my knitting friends (and this one lonely crocheter) meet up. Isn't this the coolist place to relax and enjoy some time with good friends and yarn?? The credit for the pics goes to Kate - a member of the Knead to Knit group on Ravelry. We met thru Rav, but have not yet met in person. She goes to the Thursday knit group and I go to the Saturday one. What is really sad, is that she lives about 4 blocks up the road from me.

O.K. Toodles for now. Have someone heading up this way to give me a quote on redoing one of our bathrooms.

January Update

Can't say I have done a whole lot this past month. The baby afghan for a co-worker was completed and a few scarves were made. These were sent to a shelter for abused women on the Pine Ridge reservation. And I made lots of hangers - some for the church to sell and a few more the the CFAC Web store (check it out. All monies raised goes to buy propane for needy families on the reservation). Hmm..reading this, more things were accomplished than I thought.

Last week I ordered yarn to make another Tulip afghan. The girls in the Knead to Knit group had decided to each enter one knit project for the county fair. Krista said that I should enter a crochet project too. I was truly excited at this thought. After the meeting, I went home and ordered the yarn. But disappointment was soon to come. There are categories for sewing and knitting, but no crocheting. Boy was I bummed out. But this is o.k. The tulip afghan is going to be made anyways and given as a Random Act of Kindness gift. Like the one I made last year. It was so much fun to do it, that I have decided to do a RAOK gift atleast once a year.

Off to play with my new yarn stash. Toodles!

Amazing Quilted Items

Just had to share this Etsy site with you. Toodles!!

Goodbye to 2008 ~ Hello to 2009

Mom has always told me that as you get older the years go by quicker and quicker. She wasn't joking!!! Can it really be that 2009 is less than a week away? How can that be? There were so many things I wanted to do in 2008 that just have not happened.

But, the hook has been flying away. Since my last posting: 2 hats, 2 scarves, Aubrey's Travelghan - all of these have been completed. Still working on yo yoghan #12. This is a slow project. Needed some instant gratifications. And some quick stash busting. So the hats and scarves were completed. Good thing as CFAC is having a scarf CAL for January! Yippee!! For once I can say I am ahead of the game. lol

Yesterday I was able to meet up with the knit group at the local bread store. They love me even if I cannot knit. We spent 3 hours playing with yarn and talking about life. No phones, no kids scraming...just female adult time. And I tried starting a baby blanket, but I was too busy talking that I just never got my stitch counts right. That's alright. I figured it out when I got home.

Last week on the news, I heard that a Toys for Tot's distribution center in Orlando had run out of toys. This broke my heart. Especially since a family member of mine had to rely on this program this year. Luckily, her distribution center was not affected by this. Usually I will buy one toy and put in the Toys for Tot's collection box. But for 2009, I am going to buy one toy a month. 12 toys by December. They may not be the big expensive items, but a board game or a book. Maybe even a soccer ball or a foot ball. With the way the economy is going, next Christmas will be the same, if not worse, than this year. Christmas is about the the birth of our Lord and Saviour. And I feel like He is calling upon me to do a little more for others and less for myself.

Here I Am

Seems like I am posting only once a month lately. Does this mean I am not on the computer much?? I guess after being on this nasty creation all day at work, I don't much feel like hopping right back on when I get home.

The crochet hooks have been keeping me occupied during my ups and downs of the past few months. (yes, still traveling down the path of uncertainty.) Can't remember what had been completed when I last posted (should I have read it first?? Probably). If I repeat myself, please just skip over whatever you already know.

Let's see...A grannyghan was made for a friend going thru radiation treatments. (he received it yesterday and was speechless. Definately NOT something he is.) Yo yoghan #11 has been sent and # 12 is already about 30% done. A no brainer scarf pattern was used and made in 2 days. Made a travelghan for the infusion center. This was such an easy and fun project, I decided my granddaughter should have one for Christmas. All that is left to complete this project is to put 2 buttons on it (that have to be bought yet) and to make the handle. There are several bookmarks that just need the ends tied in. Did about half of them a couple nights ago. Now to just sit and do the rest (worst part of crocheting is sewing in those nasty little ends.)

Oh, and I have been asked to make 3 pair of bunny slippers -yes!!! Commissioned work!! The colors requested?? 1 in purple and 2 in orange. Don't ask about the colors as I have no clue. Is it really the last week of this month already? Trying to think what all was accomplished, if anything, in October. Let me think....the Jacob's Ladder afghan is still in progress. Yoyoghan #11 has been completed. Working on a travelghan for the infusion center. The church asked me this past Sunday to make more hangars to be sold next Sunday (Major YIKES!). And I think there may have been a dischloth and scarf in the mix too.
The knitting is so slow going. The knitting needles may have to be returned to my friend Patti. Just cannot seem to get the right tension and the right way to hold the yarn and needles.
The bump in road I spoke of in my last post has become a hill. Trying not to have it turn into a mountain. All I can do is put this problem in God's hands. He has a plan and I am just going to have to follow what He tells me to do. Until then, I will be working on hangars the rest of this week - then back to the travelghan.
Oh, has anyone purchased yarn from Angelicrafts? I ordered $36 worth of RH millends from them. This yarn is perfect for my charity crafts. I am still going to buy from my fav online yarn store when I need to make an afghan for a present.
Tah Tah for now.

Life's LIttle Bumps

What's the saying? "Sometimes life throws you a curve ball"..I think that is it. Well, life threw one at me and I think I am playing dodge ball with it. Just as long as the ball doesn't hit me, things will be fine. (not medical, just personal) So, between the crochet slump and playing "ball", I haven't felt like posting at all.

After a weekend retreat with some friends, I have come out of hiding and am here to give the crochet up date. Really didn't think there was much to report on, but my hooks saw more crochet action than I thought. Another yo yoghan was completed (#10) and another afghan (Jacob's Ladder) is on the hook. Trying to use up what is in the stash. 2 more dishcloths have been made to go in the box heading to the women's shelter on the reservation. 170 something 5" grannys were sent to one of CFAC's collector of squares (sure hope you have room for them Monica). Those used up quite a bit stash. 5 hangars were completed. And a coaster/small doily was made for my best friend. 10 bookmarks are completed - 40 more to go. These will be going to the infusion center.

Now I am off to see what you all have been up to.

Stuff

Been awhile, I know. Just have been in a crochet slump. This is a lapghan that took forever to finish (thanks to the slump). It is a pattern called July 4th Fanfare (or is it 4th of July Fanfare?) Mom calls it a basketweave pattern.
Yo Yoghan #10 is a little over half way completed. Also, I have been trying to work thru my stash making granny squares. Have over 60 completed. Once the box is full of granny's then they will be mailed off to another CFAC member to assemble into lapghans/afghans for one of the causes we support.
Earlier in the year, I challenged LuAnne from CFAC - for every stuffed toy she made for the Infusion Center, I would make 5 bookmarks. WHOOPS! The crochet slump could not have come at a worse time!! lol She has commited to making 10 toys - and I think I just need to be comitted!!! I think I have 7 done. Sooo far behind.

Mesh Bag

Just wanted to share this mesh bag with you. I was so excited. Went and found a tote bag that I could put some yarn, scissors and crochet hook (just in case I was all fumble fingers) in. I had no knitting needles, so I e-mailed her asking if she could bring some for me to borrow. Oh, how I hoped she would get the e-mail. I was so anxious to learn this new yarn craft.
The knitting group meets a the local bread store. It is such a great place to meet friends, come read a book or just hang out and relax. We met upstairs where there were big comfy chairs set around coffee tables. There were 2 others besides Patti and myself. They made me feel like part of their little group right from the beginning. I haven't had a day like that in so long. (I stayed for 3 hours before I had to take off to do errands.)
Patti is a great teacher. She was so patient with me and my fumble fingers. And, yes, she did get my e-mail. I have never seen so many types of knitting needles in my life! She is letting me borrow some until I finish up the dishcloth I started.
The stitch she taught me is really easy - if only my finger would quit getting poked by the end of the needle. Once I figure out how to hold the yarn and needles in a comfortable way for me, then I am sure things will go a lot faster.
Thanks Patti, Bonnie and Chris (??- I am no good with names!!) ~ you girls are the best!

Knitting Lessons?

For a while now, I have been reading on friend's blogs about how fun it is to knit socks. The temptation has been there for me to learn the art of knitting so I too can try to make some (even tho they won't go well with my flip flops and sandals). Yesterday, I think I finally got the final temptation. Story goes....the owner of the company I work for told his wife - who knits - that I knit also (poor man doesn't know the difference between a hook and knitting needles..lol). For her mother's day gift, he paid to send her to the yearly Knitter's Convention. He told me how much fun she was having up there and how I needed to go next year. Yesterday, his wife shows up with a goodie bag for me! I was speechless! And she knew I was a grandma, so she gave me a pattern for baby socks/booties along with the yarn needed to make them. Now, I think I will have to find out when the next beginner's knitting class is at my LYS and make sure I have seat reserved in my name.
Earlier this week, YoYoghan #9 was completed. This week sometime, a box will be mailed with 2 yo yoghans heading for The Hartwyck Brain Trauma Unit in NJ. Also was able to finish up another scarf and several squares from the 99 Granny Square Booklet.
In the past I have mentioned my Aunt Mable who crocheted over 300 afghans for Project Linus. Tomorrow is her 98th birthday!!! She is my idol. In honor of her birthday and her many years of crocheting for charity, the afghan that I hope to start tomorrow will be given in her honor to a CFAC cause when completed. Just got off the phone with her and she is as spunky as ever. She finally put down her hook several months ago due to her eyesight. She told me how much she missed it. Tried to get her to try bigger hooks, but she said no. (Told her she is a stubborn, old Norwegian..lol)
Enjoy your weekend!

Yo Yos, Yo Yos Everywhere

By the end of this weekend I should be able to complete the 2nd yo yoghan for the month. This pic is of the earth tone one I was working on. Put the call out to CFAC members that I needed more of these colors and boy did they pull thru! I think there is almost enough of these colors left to make another one in earth tones. The one on my hook now is more bright colors - and it is yo yoghan #9. After this one is done, the count will be 2,916 yo yos connected! The majority of these made and sent to me by CFAC members. I can't say enough about how great these girls are.

Making dishcloths and potholders is the CFAC challenge for June and July. So far I have made ONE!! Someone mentioned using 2 strands of doily thread, so I had to try it. Not sure how it will work with washing dishes, but it sure looks and feels nice.

Many years ago mom gave me a book called 99 Granny Squares to Crochet. This week I decided to try and make as many of these as possible. They will be sent to one of our members who collects and assembles them into lapghans for our charity causes. So far there are 5 sitting in a box waiting for more to join them. Been using up the yarn I had left over from the Tulip Afghan - white, burgundy, pink. Been having fun doing this.

Tuesday is Sea World day! Meeting Vicki (from our CFAC group) is going to be so much fun! And we are taking Little Aubrey with us!!! Hubby and I are really looking forward to this day.

Time to get off this puter and get myself together. Will be at church all day today for a "new members" informational class. I am a member at the church, but thought this would be a good refresher course for me. Plus it gets me out of the house since hubby is at work. Hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

And the Verdict Is...

We decided against getting Rufus the puppy. As much as we wanted to give him a new furever home, we thought it wouldn't be the best for him at this time. As his foster parents put it, he is a work in progress. The trainer he has came and talked to us too. I just don't think I would have been able to give him the training needed - especially since we leave for vacation mid July. Poor puppy would have been so confused. Left tied to a tree, picked up by the Humane Society, put in a foster home, then our home, then doggy hotel, then back to our home. There was another couple who had inquired about him. Maybe they can give him the time and patience to make him a well behaved dog (he loves to jump!!) But, if he still has not been placed when we get back from vacation, we may call and see if we can get him.
Crochet wise...finally finished the scarf for May. Never did start the May slippers. But I have til the end of June..right?? lol CFAC members heard my call for earthtone yo yos and they have sent enough for me to take lapghan #8 our of hiding and back to the hook. Now I am only 3 rows away from completing it. Maybe today that could be accomplished. Started working on lapghan #9 using bright colors while I was waiting for the earthtone ones. Now that one is sleeping peacefully until #8 is done. Yesterday I also made 3 hangars for the church. Trying to get atleast a dozen done by next Sunday. Right now I have a total of 6. Half way there.
In a couple weeks, I am going to meet up with one of the members of CFAC. She is coming to Orlando with her teenage son and his friend for a week. Hubby and I will meet up with them at SeaWorld for a day of fun. I am really excited about meeting her. She is so much fun to chat with on-line. Yesterday we talked on the phone for about 45 minutes. And we never had one of those awkward moments of silence.
Off to get some work done around the house. Maybe I can talk hubby into taking the boat out this afternoon if it isn't too awful hot.

Is it June Already?

Here it is the start of a new month and I have NOT finished my May monthly self-imposed challenges (a pair of bunny slippers and one scarf). How difficult can this be???
Last week I started working on this scarf. It is a pattern from the Seamen's Church Institute. Click HERE for the pattern. As thick as this is, it will keep a neck warm on the Rez next winter. And it is really so simple to make. Bunny slippers?? Maybe I will get to them next week. I was able to finish a dishcloth made with 2 strands fo crochet thread. But that is about it. Been reading more than crocheting lately.
Tomorrow, hubby and I are going to take a road trip to Gainesville to visit a puppy (well, he is about a year old). Since our Sammy died, we have been back and forth about getting another dog. We still are not sure, but when I saw this guy's pic, I just had to inquire. For those that are interested, go to the Florida Sharpei Rescue/Adoptable Dogs site (see, I made it easy for ya), then scroll down til you see Rufus. His face just says "Don't ya want to play with me??" Talked to his foster dad today. He says Rufus is still a work in progress. Not sure that will fit with our work schedules. If it is meant to be, then we will know as soon as we meet up with him. If not, then we will continue our wait for the right fit.
Guess I should go work on the scarf til hubby gets home from work.

Not Much Happening Here

YoYoghan #8 is being made in earthtones. Last night I realized that I would not have enough earthtones to complete this one, so I had to put it down. I have asked the CFAC memebers to help me out. I know soon this lapghan will be picked up again and soon completed. In the meantime, tonight I will start yoyoghan #9 with pretty pastel colors.
CFAC's June/July challenge will be dishcloths. For June, they will be mailed to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (we have a couple contacts there). Then in July, we will be mailing our dishcloths to a domestic violence center on the Rez.
Final update on the Tulip lapghan. My friend received her suprise gift this past Friday. She e-mailed me and said how she walked around for the first half hour holding this lapghan and crying. She had been reading the updates on my blog, so she knew about it. Just did not realize this ROAK was for her. But the best part?? She is going to pass on the RAOK by making a gift for someone she knows who is going thru hard time right now. I started a couple nights ago. So far, I have 4 hours into it. The hardest part is cutting all the little pieces (which really is not hard at all). It takes 2 - 8" strands at the end of every row. Mind you, every row was done in single crochet. So there are lots of ends and lots of 8" strands. But it is all worth it. The final afghan is so pretty (yes, I am patting my self on the back with this one. sorry)
Oh, and the bunny slippers for April were made. Now I have to do the scarf and slippers for May. And then start on the next yo yo ghan. Busy busy busy. What has everyone else been up to? Have less than 15 rows to complete before the dreaded fringe can be started. Will be mailing these this week along with 20 snake book marks and the lastest yo yo ghan. Was hoping to have some more goodies in the box. Next time I will see what I can find to stuff the box with.
I have also been working on Gail's Favorite Dish Cloth. One scarf and one pair of bunny slippers a month does not sound that hard. Well, the scarf for April got done last weekend, but the bunny slippers never made it to the hook. So today I HAVE to make them. But it is so hard putting down that tulip afghan. It is half way done (not counting the fringe process) and the excitement is building. Suprising people is so much fun.
Last week hubby and I suprised our friend Bruce. Bruce and his wife Lynn are the couple we cruised to Alaska with last Sept. (Lynn and I met online thru CFAC. We decided to meet in person while taking a cruise.) Anyways, Bruce told us his dream was to climb Mt Everest. Guess what I found? Been working on the tulip afghan as much as I can. Really excited to get it finished and mailed off. Have also been making one finger puppet and a couple granny's daughters each day. These are for the April/May challenge at CFAC. Have been a little sidetracked. Mom gave me a book that I just could not put down. Finished that one yesterday. Then picked up another one and now I can't seem to put this one down. Keeps me out of the bars, right?? lol
Oh crud! I just remembered...I promised myself to make one scarf and one pair of bunny slippers a month. The month is almost over with. Would like to get it down to one place to do my crochet journaling. Will see which blog gets more responses and views. I don't want to lose contact with any of my online friends, so help me decide what to do. OH, I am so confused. (lol)
Yesterday I got up and went to the beach. I am still missing not having Little Aubrey here, but she called me yesterday. "Mommy and I are going to the beach" she told me. "Really Aubrey? Grandma is getting ready to go to the beach too!" Her response...."I'll see you there, grandma". How cute. Mind you, she lives a little over an hour away. Told her I was going to a different beach, but next weekend I would come up and go to the beach with her. Came home, did some weeding in the yard, washed some clothes and washed the car and read my book. Did not pick up the crochet hook til after hubby and I got home from dinner. We were supposed to go to a wedding next door, but we just did not feel like it. Went and wished the bride best wishes before dinner, then bowed out. It was just a small wedding with family only. Felt a little out of place.
After church, my butt is coming home, plopping in my chair and I WILL finish the baby afghan. I so much want to start the tulip afghan. The temptation is great, but I will not be seduced by the pretty yarn. lol

PBS Cancer Special

Tonight at 9:00 EST, Wed April 16th, there will be a 90 special on most PBS stations about the Dana Farber Foundation. I am inviting all to watch. Not only to see what Dana Farber has done to help find a cure for cancer, but also because my cousin Jennifer will be on this show. She was diagonosed with breast cancer 8 years ago, while in her 20's. She has been fighting hard ever since. She has come close to loosing her battle twice within the past couple months. But somehow she finds the strength to keep fighting.
From the PBS site (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/takeonestep/cancer/index.html): "This film makes it clear that it's very much a part of American culture to believe that if you fight hard enough, you can beat cancer. But when it comes to having metastatic cancer, your survival depends on the biology of your cancer cells, and whether they are susceptible to state-of-the-art treatment,". The special is 90 minutes long and Jennifer's story will be shared somewhere in the middle. Although I don't know exactly what will be aired from all of the film shot, I do hope that we will be able to appreciate the care she has received at Dana Farber through several clinical trials.
For the past couple of years, Jennifer's SIL, Laura, has been walking in Avon's Walk for Breast Cancer along with some of her friends. She does this for Jennifer. So far, her team has raised over $46,000. Please check out Laura's site to see some of the ways they have helped support this cause www.walkforbreastcancer.org.
I hope you get a chance to watch the show.

Half Way There

As of last night, I am on the down side of this afghan. These corner to corner (diagonal) patterns are really easy, but they remind me of the round ripple afghan in a way. With the round ripple , the rounds keep getting longer and longer to finish since you are adding stitches to each row. The corner to corner is the same, until you reach the measurement you want it to be. Then you start decreasing stitches on each row. I have used up about 2 skeins of yarn so far from the stash received from my friend at work. This means 2 more skeins will be used on the downside. Total of 4 skeins will be gone. Then I can get to work on the other 37 new skeins. Of course, I am not even going to mention the other stash stuffed in garbage bags, totes and boxes scattered thru out the house.
The weekend was quiet, but I survived. Kept busy working in the yard on Saturday. (Trying to get my tan going as vacation time is in a few months. Even tho I live in FL, my skin is pretty white. ) Was able to get a good start on a book mom gave me. So far I am liking it. House cleaning?? Well, did some laundry and dishes. That's about it. Yesterday, went to church, then spent the rest of the morning into the afternoon with mom and dad. Our church started a new contemporary service, so we tried that out.Of course, dad was in charge of the sound system stuff, so mom and I stayed up in the choir loft with him. If I were down with the rest of the congregation, I think I would have enjoyed it more. Will try it again next week.
Yes, the cupcakes were made. All by myself (pity party time). Tried a new recipe for lemon cupcakes. Not as lemony as I thought they would be, but still pretty good. Should I quit rambling now? No little one to come out and sit in my lap and try and type with me. My fingers don't know how to take this. lol Thanks for listening again. Hope everyone has a great week.
